Tutorials > TileMill & Mapbox
TileMill is a program that you can install on your desktop that allows you to map locational data really quickly and produce attractive, interactive maps. Mapbox, the company that designed TileMill, also offers free web hosting for your map (up to a certain amount of file space). We'll use a little bit of TileMill to help visualize our 1880 data, and Mapbox to put those maps up on our website.
To use them, you'll need to create a free Mapbox account. Navigate to mapbox.com and click on "Sign Up" to create an account.
Next, download TileMill onto your desktop here.
The tutorial offered by TileMill covers virtually everything you need to know about uploading and styling a map. If you can get through the tutorial below, with my additional clarification and notes, you'll know all you need to know for the lab.
I've written up some Mapbox instructions to help you publish the maps, though you'll find that in this case, it is a very easy process.
